Operation Zero Tolerance is Georgia's high visibility enforcement program that targets impaired drivers through concentrated patrols and sobriety checkpoints. During this year's enforcement campaign, police officers, sheriffs deputies and state troopers will work together to protect everyone from impaired drivers during this busy time of the year. The Georgia campaign is part of the national Over the Limit, Under Arrest program.

DUI PATROLS ARE CRACKING DOWN THIS HOLIDAY
STATEWIDE ENFORCEMENT TARGETS DRUNK DRIVERS
(ATLANTA) — While December means holiday cheer and time with loved ones for most, this season will unfortunately bring tragedy for some! Our federal and state crash data show the travel period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is one of the most dangerous times on our highways. That can make the Christmas travel period deadly in Georgia and nationwide.
Impaired driving is the reason-- It’s one of America’s deadliest crimes. In December 2009 alone, 753 people were killed across the country in crashes involving drivers with illegal blood alcohol concentrations of .08 or higher. Equally disturbing is the revelation that nearly a quarter of young males admitted to riding with someone who should not have been behind the wheel.
That’s why the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) is joining with hundreds of highway safety partners across the state for this Operation Zero Tolerance holiday enforcement campaign. During this high-visibility program of sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols, drivers detected Over the Limit will be placed Under Arrest.
Right here in Georgia, 25 people died during the 2008 Christmas travel period. The sad fact is one-out-of-three of our fatal highway crashes each year is caused by impaired drivers. “Our message is clear,” says Director Bob Dallas of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. “No matter who you are, what you drive or where you drive it, when you’re caught driving impaired, you will be arrested. No warnings. No excuses. No exceptions.”
Overall, Georgia experienced 7,814 alcohol-related crashes in 2008! At GOHS, we’re hoping this Operation Zero Tolerance holiday enforcement campaign of will help keep those numbers from increasing in this final month of 2010.
How can we stop these needless deaths? Georgia’s statewide Operation Zero Tolerance holiday enforcement crackdown begins Friday, December 17 and runs through Sunday, January 2, 2011. “We’re even telling motorists when to watch out for more flashing lights in their rearview mirror because this campaign is completely about saving lives,” says GOHS Director Bob Dallas. “It’s not about revenue and it’s not about writing more tickets. It’s about making sure people survive the holidays.”
“When we remember what we’re grateful for this holiday season, we will include our dedicated enforcement partners who run their concentrated patrols and sobriety checkpoints to protect the millions of innocent motorists who will take to the roads to visit family and friends this month,” says Director Dallas. “These high visibility enforcement campaigns play a critical role in reducing impaired driving crashes and DUI deaths in Georgia.”
So remember, whether you’ve had way too many or just one too many, it’s not worth the risk!” says GOHS Director Dallas. “Get a designated driver. Don’t let 2010 end in an arrest or even worse for you.” For more about Operation Zero Tolerance visit the GOHS website at www.gahighwaysafety.org.
